What is hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Hypnotherapy is the name given to the processes that actually create the positive changes you desire and occurs when the therapist uses hypnosis to accelerate these changes.

Hypnotherapy can help you to tap into your natural ability to change the way you think and feel. Hypnosis is simply a very relaxed, focused state of mind, similar to being deeply involved in a film or book. Most people find it a very pleasant and relaxing experience. It is completely safe and you will remain in control at all times, but with a comfortable sense of detachment. In fact, the beauty of hypnotherapy is that it will allow you to be more in control of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours in the future, allowing you to be free from whatever has previously held you back.

In the first half of your session we will determine your goal and during hypnosis you will be able to make the necessary deep, lifelong changes. I will help you to access your own resources, and to develop new ones to enhance your life. The majority of clients feel the results from their very first session.

Should I consider hypnotherapy?

....don't if you can answer "yes" to all of the following questions:

  • Am I a healthy non-smoker with a long, happy life to look forward to?

  • Do I act with confidence and shine in social and professional situations?

  • Is there no situation that I have to deal with in my life in which I am hampered by a disproportionate or irrational fear?

  • Do I know how to really relax?

  • Is there no area of my life that I can improve on?
If you answered "no" to any of the above, give some thought to hypnotherapy, and to how a small investment could greatly improve your life!

Hypnotherapy is just as it sounds – therapy, made quicker and more effective in many circumstances with the use of hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a tool that we use to increase the power of the therapy, and is simply a part of our psychology. Hypnotherapy also utilises no drugs and uses a completely natural state of mind to create positive change.

What is Hypnosis Suggestion?

It is our subconscious mind that determines much of the way we behave and react to experiences. Because your subconscious is alert during the relaxed state of hypnosis, suggestion work can be highly effective to communicate a new positive way of approaching life / a particular problem / a goal. When someone is in the state of hypnosis, their subconscious mind is more receptive to ideas and suggestions. A skilled hypnotherapist can utilise this, and with nothing more than the careful use of language, can speak 'directly' to the subconscious mind, to affect the desired change. This is sometimes called 'Suggestion Therapy’.

Suggestion work is ideal for dealing with:

  • Habitual behaviour such as smoking, over-eating, nail biting, thumb sucking

  • Increased self belief and confidence to overcome shyness, blushing,
inhibitions, anxiety about public speaking, fear of job interviews,
examinations or physical tests such as driving and pain management

  • Improve concentration on performance, e.g. sports performance
What is Hypnoanalysis (or analytical hypnotherapy)?

This is where hypnotherapy (i.e. therapy using hypnosis), is combined with psychoanalysis. This process allows the therapist to help treat a much wider range of issues.

Pioneered by the psychotherapist Sigmund Freud, Hypnoanalysis is the feather in the cap of the hypnotherapeutic process. Freud discovered that your actions and emotions today are based on a 'cause' and 'effect' process in your mind. I.e. Previous experiences ('cause') are influencing your behaviour today ('effect').
Freud’s however rejected hypnosis in favour of his own theories of free association and dream interpretation.

Hypnoanalysis allows the client to find the emotions and feelings from their past, (often forgotten), which is causing their problems in later life. For this reason it is used to treat the more complex issues such as general anxiety, phobias, social anxiety, unexplained nervousness, etc.

For many people, describing the 'effect' is very easy, yet seeking to establish the 'cause' is a far larger task. Hypnoanalysis is powerful tool that will help you to discover the original cause of psychological and emotional problems. Once revealed and resolved, the symptoms ('effect') should permanently disappear.

Analysis is ideal for dealing with:

  • Irrational fears and phobias

  • Post traumatic stress disorder, childhood trauma, cumulative trauma
